The programming language used in programming I is using Visual Basic 6.0.
Textbook: Programming with Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 – Enhanced Edition,
Course Objectives:
This course is designed for students that have completed computer programming I and II and now desire to study further in an area of their choosing.
Required Units of Study: (approximately 6 – 8 weeks)**
Completion of the following chapters in the above mention textbook.
1. Chapter 10 Variable Arrays (estimated time 2 weeks)
2. Chapter 11 What’s new with Visual Basic.net (estimated time 2 weeks)
3. Chapter 12 More on Visual Basic.net and the internet (estimated time 2 weeks)
4. Chapter 9 in workbook Visual Basic Programming Projects. (estimated time 1 week)
5. Completion of a program such as a full blown testing or grading program or other approved program. (Estimated time 1 – 2 weeks)
Grading procedure on required portion of course
Grade determination will include the following three areas:
A. Participation (time on task and effort) (33 1/3%) Because this is an independent study course and the subject matter is not as rigid, student’s time on task will be closely monitored and will consititute 33% of grade.
a. 100% on task—5 pts (student immediately logs unto computer and starts work and remains on task for the remainder of hour time on task 50-55 minutes)
b. most of time on tasks—4 pts (Student may be slow at logging on and may quit early—time on task 45-50 minutes
c. more than half of time on task—3 pts (Student takes his time logging on and is easily distracted, buy does work more than half of hour—time on task 30-40 minutes_.
d. less than half of time on task—2pts (student wastes more than half of hour—time on task 20-29 minutes)
e. only a portion of time on task—1 pt (student studies other work and might spend only a few minutes on independent study work)
B. Assignments (33 1/3%) Most assignments consist of textbook work and programming projects and are graded on a scale of 0 to 5 with total earned points divided by total possible points determining grade.
C. Tests (33 1/3% )
Grading procedure on elective portion of course
Possible course directions for remainder of semester.
1. Create an elaborate web site using Frontpage, HTML, or maybe Geocities (Create a plan subject to instructor’s approval)
2. Explore another computer language such as: Java
3. Find an computer textbook of your choosing in a subject area you would like to specialize in such as:
a. Digital photography
b. Windows, (although this may present a problem with our networked computers)
c. Enroll in a online computer course such as:
i. http://www.pendaflexlearningcenter.com
ii.
d. Select a Dummies book at your favorite bookstore and bring it in for approval.
** I have two or three handpicked students that I want to work exclusively on the school web site. These students will be given assigned tasks to complete on the web and will be graded primarily for their time on task as listed above.
